He is a non executive chairman, rather than a Lewis type so he doesn't have the jurisdiction to do an awful lot, rather he is in place to oversee and scrutinise the executive members. (Put very simply). I think the two tier board structure was introduced following the Watkins report, alongside a number of subcommittees.

When he was appointed, he mentioned he was going to "open his book of contacts" to the RFL, the implication being that this would be of some tangiable benefit. Yet to see that but 2014 is probably the time to start judging it.

Even as an NED, he's engaged in a senior position and it's fair to expect him to have some sort of impact.

He came into the post with a reputation as someone who could handle the press, court and take advantage of media contacts and raise the profile of the game.

I'll reserve full judgement until the WC but I'm not seeing much change in the journals I read (though Swimwear Illustrated hasn't ever been that big on RL to be fair).

Give the man a chance, he has been in the job for all of six months. Judge him on his tenure at the end of it, not before he has even got going.

If you look back on the VT, this time last year there was a long thread saying that an Olympic gold medallist, rather than a distant royal presenting the cup. You just cannot win with rugby league fans.
